Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
