Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Medvedev claimed his initial title for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The Russian, a former world number one, has endured a torrid year, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a setback at the American major.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and eventually splitting with former coach his previous coach.
Now collaborating with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently advanced in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's initial trophy following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hardcourt from March of the previous year.
The win also means the Russian has achieved 21 titles at 21 distinct tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter her name was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, comprising in the German tournament earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive approach and frequent reactions on the playing surface had led some to wonder if his ability to compete at the highest level was finished.
However the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform positively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.
Medvedev recovered from a break down in the first set against the tricky opponent, taking 4 of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.
The competitors traded breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour championship, took control to force a decider.
The opponent defended 4 initial opportunities in a competitive final set before the champion broke to 15 to serve for the match.
Fittingly, Medvedev secured victory with a shot at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
